This Sunday, Emporians have a chance to honor their loved ones with what is now an annual tree-lighting ceremony.
The Ace It Up tradition was created in memory of Ace Garate after his passing several years ago from a traffic crash. This is the fourth year the lighting will take place, with one ceremony being held virtually due to Covid-19.
During the lighting, people are welcomed to write the names of loved ones who have passed on red ribbons and hang them on the tree.
Amy Garate, Ace’s mother, describes how this tradition is the perfect way to honor him.
The tree lighting ceremony is also partnered with the Spartan Stop to help give back to children and teens throughout the holiday season. Garate tells how Ace it Up has done so in the past, and how it relates back to remembering Ace.
The event will take place this Sunday at White Memorial Park, Sixth and Merchant, with activities beginning at 6 p.m.
