Emporia State University’s Special Collections and Archives Department will have a presentation about the lives of free-born African Americans this week.
Angela Bates, the executive director of the Nicodemus Historical Society, will present “Children of the Promised Land,” historical information about early life in Nicodemus, an unincorporated town in Graham County that’s the only town established by African Americans following the Civil War that still exists. The pictorial history will look at the experiences of mothers and their children.
The presentation is free and open to the public. It’s being made possible by the Humanities Kansas Speakers Bureau and 21st Century Civics. It will be held at 7 pm Tuesday at the William Allen White Library’s Learning Commons.
