Council Grove saw its season come to an end in the 2A sub-state final at Nemaha Central, 21-6.
The Thunder led 7-0 at halftime and extended it to 14-0. The closest Council Grove got was 14-6 early in the fourth quarter before the Thunder got an insurance touchdown late. Nemaha Central will look for a third consecutive state championship in Class 2A when it faces Southeast of Saline, who defeated Beloit on a last second touchdown, 34-30, next Friday in Hutchinson.
Emporia’s Welch Stadium will host Classes 6A, 5A and 4A. Next Friday at 2 p.m., Centennial League foe Manhattan will look for its second state championship in three years as it faces defending state champion Gardner-Edgerton. Class 5A at 7 p.m. Saturday will feature Hays and St. Thomas Aquinas, while 4A will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday featuring Andover Central and Bishop Miege. In Class 3A at Hutchinson, Andale will take on Centennial League foe Hayden at noon next Saturday. In 1A, Conway Springs will take on Centralia. In 8-Man Division I, it’ll be Central Plains taking on Hoxie. In 8-Man Division II, it’ll be Axtell looking for a fourth-straight state title taking on Victoria. In 6-Man, Cunningham will take on Weskan.
