Jury scams are now becoming commonplace nationwide. And there is another circulation happening locally.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office now says it has received “multiple” reports of people being contacted by phone and getting told they missed jury duty. Those calls also include payment demands to avoid arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office says no legitimate law enforcement entity will call to demand payment as a way to avoid arrest. Law enforcement does not take fines or fees over the phone. If you get a call like this:
*Hang up immediately
*Be sure not to provide any personal or financial information
*Reach out to local law enforcement using the agency’s verified number
As far as common signs of scam efforts, those include:
*Demands for immediate payment
*Demands for payments through wire transfers, cryptocurrency or gift cards
*Threats of arrest, legal action, computer virus or other steps to loved ones
*Instructions to stay silent about the call
If you believe you have been victimized or targeted, reach out to your local law enforcement agency
