New equipment, a rise in youth attendance and steady overall numbers were all highlights of the Jones Aquatic Center's 2019 summer season.

Emporia Recreation Center Aquatics Supervisor Jennifer Wegener says overall attendance numbers weren't exactly where they would have liked them to be this year, however, she says it was still a great summer season.

According to Wegener, the overall numbers saw just under 22,000 visitors at the Aquatic Center this year. She says numbers were down for May due to heavy rainfall and cooler conditions but rose significantly in June and July before again slowing down in August.

The total attendance, while impacted by the weather, was still on pace with previous years according to Wegener. While overall numbers broke relatively even compared to 2018, Wegener says the introduction of the new inflatables this year played a role in an increase of children visiting the pool.

Swimming activities now shift to the Emporia Recreation Center's indoor pool with programs already underway.

Wegener says swimming lessons are currently ongoing and there are several events on the calendar including an "itty bitty pool party" for children in November. For a full schedule of pool times and events visit Emporiarec.org.
