New Public Works Director Dean Grant says he's impressed with Emporia's forward-thinking approach to public works.

Grant joined KVOE's Morning Show recently for an introductory interview. With Emporia's reputation as having some of the world's best drinking water, Grant said he had to try it after his formal interview -- and he says the city has earned that reputation.

Grant comes to Emporia after better than 20 years in public works in Texas, most recently as the director of the Bowie public works department. He also comes to Emporia with numerous projects either underway or recently completed -- and with the city still grappling with how to protect water pipes from breaking. He suggests an approach called "bedding" lines.

The city continues work on renovating the downtown sanitary sewer network and building a new water tower in the southeast part of the city, with a bowl-raising for the tower coming at 11:30 am Tuesday. It also recently completed massive renovations to the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Grant replaces Frank Abart, who left Emporia to become Bonner Springs' public works director in January.
