Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1980 is seeking help as it looks to regain its financial footing and keep its building at 932 Graphic Arts.

Post Commander Michael White says issues go from 2014 through last year, when certain unspecified employee tax documents weren't sent to the Internal Revenue Service as needed. White says the matter was brought to his attention early this year.

White says there does not appear to be any ill intent.

White isn't saying exactly how much money is needed at this time, but he says it's "a substantial number" and it's "quite difficult to recover at this point."

The post board has voted to sell the building, although White wants to exhaust all other options before taking that step.

The property is listed at around $158,000, although White does not expect the VFW will see the full sale price if the property is indeed sold. White says the VFW also has several fundraisers coming, including a concert featuring Just Passing Through on Nov. 9 and a gun raffle ending that day.

White says a decision -- what he calls "D Day" -- is fast approaching.

White tells KVOE News a sale of the building would not mean the end of the group, which has over 300 members. Organization rules say a chapter needs at least 10 members and a meeting place, and White says there are several locations the group could go for meetings if it has to sell the property. The state and national VFW organizations cannot provide financial assistance, but they have also given White some suggestions about different ways to help resolve things.

For more information about fundraisers, call White at 785-430-8095 or the post directly at 342-9864.
