Lyon County’s 2020-21 budget has been sent off for publication following county commission approval Thursday.

The budget comes in at just over $31 million and will see a mill decrease of 4.1 mills from 59.73 to 55.71 mills. County Controller Dan Williams has noted a decrease of this size is a rare occurrence.

He attributes the decrease to several factors. The county's assessed valuations of property increased this year by roughly five percent and the county elected to forgo paying its full share of the city/county joint emergency radio project and have chosen to pay its portion through a lease agreement.

Additionally, Wiliams noted the commission chose to allocate an additional $200,000 to the Lyon County Health Department due to impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. The budget has been sent off for publication and the commission will hold a public hearing at 10 am on Aug. 14 at which time the budget may see final approval.

In other business, Lyon County Appraiser Ryan Janzen was in attendance to discuss the county's 2019 ratio study results. According to Janzen, the county was found to be in compliance with all requirements.

Commissioners spent the remainder of the morning in executive session with no action taken. The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action session next Thursday inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
