Like a lot of events that haven't been canceled due to coronavirus, the David Traylor Zoo's Happy Holidaze lighting ceremony will look different when it happens Tuesday.

Zoo Director Lisa Keith says it was important for the zoo staff and the Emporia Friends of the Zoo to have the event after all the zoo's major events, aside from the annual Roundup Auction, had to be canceled and education activities had to go virtual.

Happy Holidaze begins around 5 pm, with Abigail Triemer performing music and the John and Jill Newland family flipping the ceremonial switch to turn on close to 10,000 feet of lights. There are new animal fixtures to see and the ongoing conversion from traditional incandescent lights to the modern LED variety continues with around 70 percent of the lights now LEDs. Rain in the forecast, and the plan at this time is to move forward.

The holiday lights will be turned on evenings through the end of the year after Happy Holidaze on Tuesday.

KVOE's Scott Hayes will have updates starting around 4:45 pm on KVOE, with video coverage starting at 5:30 pm on KVOE-TV at KVOE.com.
