The Lyon County Fairgrounds was a bright beacon Friday evening welcoming the more than 1,300 disc golfers in attendance for the 2021 Dynamic Discs Open.

Hundreds of disc golfers descended on the fairgrounds for one of the DDO's signature after-hour events the annual Swedish bonfire. The event gave disc golfers a chance to interact with one another, share some stories from their time on the courses over the past week and, of course, get in a few late-night rounds.

Emporia native and former PDGA World Champion Eric McCabe was in attendance Friday and says he is so happy they were able to have the event back on the calendar after its absence last year due to COVID-19.

He says you'll never find a more eclectic collection of individuals than those in the disc golf community.

One of the disc golfers who made the long trip to Emporia this year was Kyle Giovannini who traveled all the way from Indiana to take in the festivities. He says getting to come to Emporia is a highlight for him each year.

He says aside from the world-class competition, he loves the warm embrace he and others receive from the local community.

Competition in the 2021 DDO will wrap up Saturday afternoon with festivities set to conclude with the annual DDO Block Party in downtown Emporia Saturday evening. KVOE will broadcast from the block party from 5 pm to 7 pm.
