In a sense, Ron Highland has been waiting for special military honors for a year. He'll get them Monday.

Highland was announced last year as a member of the US Army Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame and had the award conferred a year ago. However, the official induction ceremony is coming at 9 am Monday in the Kansas Statehouse.

Highland graduated from Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1967 and was commissioned as an infantry officer. He then served in Korea before other assignments in Fort Riley as well as Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He rose to the rank of captain and received the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Humanitarian Service Medal while in the Army.

Highland has also distinguished himself as part of the Who's Who in Veterinary Science and Medicine. He is in his fifth term in the Kansas House representing the 51st District, which includes Admire, Allen, Bushong and Reading in Lyon County as well as all of Wabaunsee County.
