The Lyon County Transfer Station will likely be a busy place through the upcoming weekend with Free Landfill Days now underway.

The free event got underway Saturday at the Lyon County transfer station and will continue through next Sunday. As part of the event, residents are allowed one free trip to offload up to 1,000 lbs of waste at no charge -- reflecting a change requested by the Emporia City Commission back in 2018 from a longtime standard of two free trips. Solid Waste Supervisor Keith Senn says the event still generates a lot of items, even with that adjustment.

Any loads that exceed the 1,000 lbs limit will be charged the normal rate. Additionally, the event will only be permitted for residential vehicles, light trucks and utility trailers. Residents wishing to drop off tires or any appliances that contain refrigerant -- refrigerators and air conditioners -- will still have to pay the standard rates.

Residents wishing to take advantage of free dumping opportunities will need to bring their April 2021 electric bill. Senn encourages people to use the Transfer Stations during the week because lines get long during the weekends.

Hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 1-5 pm Sunday.
