Emporia State men hold on for 68-66 win at Fort Hays State Featured

In a game that featured 14 lead changes and 12 ties the Emporia State men out scored Fort Hays State 6-4 in the final minute of play and held on for a 68-66 win Saturday afternoon.

The biggest lead for both teams was by 4 points. Emporia State held the lead at halftime 32-30. The Hornets were able to make 6 of 8 free throws in the final 42 seconds and Fort Hays Kaleb Hammeke missed a 3 point shot at the buzzer for the Hornets to hold on for the win. 

Coach Craig Doty said they made plays when they needed to make them.

Emporia State relied on their guard tandem of Austin Downing and Jumah'Ri Turner to lead the way.

Downing finished with 19 points.

Turner scored 18 points. 

Fort Hays State was led by Jared Vitztum with 20 points. 

With the win the Hornets improved to 2-0 to start the season. It's only the 2nd time during the MIAA era that the Emporia State men opened the season with two wins on the road. The 1st time was 2015-2016 at Fort Hays and at Nebraska Kearney. 

The Hornets are scheduled to play again next Saturday at Northeastern State.

Coach Doty and his staff are hoping the cowboy hats they wore during the game was the luck they needed.

The womens game with Fort Hays State was postponed and has not been rescheduled.
