Laura Kelly outlined her plan for the governor’s seat to Lyon County Democrats during the group’s monthly meeting Monday night.
Kelly has served Senate District 18 since 2005, and she calls herself the experienced candidate on the Democratic side.
Kelly says the Emporia area is important to her family, with her husband, Ted Daughtey, traveling from Topeka to Emporia every week to practice medicine.
Kelly says she’s pleased with the direction the state is taking on public education funding, but it’s up to lawmakers to follow through on Supreme Court directives to make adjustments to the plan submitted earlier this year.
Kelly is part of a crowded field on the Democrat side, including former representative and secretary of agriculture Josh Svaty, former Wichita mayor Carl Brewer, Air Force Col. Arden Andersen and teenager Jack Bergeson.
