Early childhood education was the focus of this week’s Emporia Showcase.
USD 253 Emporia Public Schools is preparing for its annual preschool enrollment and kindergarten readiness event next week at Maynard Early Childhood Education Center. Maynard staff members appeared on Tuesday’s Showcase on KVOE highlighting the importance of preschool learning. Early childhood teacher Susan Cates says the growth they see in just one year can be incredible.
With a diverse population in Emporia schools, a major focus with the three and four-year-old students is on improving literacy. Early childhood teacher Mary Beth Tavares says it’s crucial as they transition kids to kindergarten.
People that should attend are parents of children who will be three or four on or before Aug. 31. Half day classes are free for those who meet one or more eligibility requirements. Parents need to bring a birth certificate, immunization records and most recent physicals.
The Maynard preschool event takes place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24 at Maynard Early Childhood Education Center, located at 19 Constitution Street.
