Safety around schools and bus routes is being discussed across Kansas, including Emporia, after a fatal incident involving a crossing guard in Kansas City, Kansas, on Tuesday.
Bob Nill, an employee with Wyandotte County Unified Government, was hit by a vehicle outside Christ the King Parish School just after pushing two kids out of the way. He was killed as a result.
USD 253 Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Kelly Bolin reminds drivers and pedestrians to pay attention.
Bolin says drivers have to come to full stops at stop signs as opposed to a near-stop before rolling through an intersection.
Bolin also took time to remind drivers about bus safety, especially heeding the stop arms that come out when buses stop to pick up or drop off students.
Nill had been a crossing guard five years after serving in the Coast Guard and having a career in banking, according to WDAF-TV in Kansas City. Police in Kansas City are investigating.
