Homegrown was a hit again.
The annual partnership between the Emporia Farmers Market and ESB Financial brought hundreds of people to downtown to enjoy produce, face painting, the Arts Center Artmobile — and, yes, watermelon games. Farmers Market Coordinator Jessica Hopkins says the event really is symbolic of summer.
ESB Financial Vice President Karen Sommers says the event also highlights the local flavor, pardon the pun, of the market and the bank, which has been headquartered in Emporia since is started in 1887.
For the watermelon contests, the top rollers were Marshall Roark, Sloane Bayer and Rallend Brinkman. Fastest eaters were Linus Shirk, Anthony Rodriguez and Giada Bulinski. Best spitter was Brooks Bayer.
