Parts of Lyon County could be placed into different House districts than they are now if the current map under consideration is approved.
Major changes could be coming for the 51st District as represented by Republican Ron Highland of Wamego.
Highland says he regrets the chance of losing rural Lyon County, and he says it will be more of a challenge to represent Manhattan because of its more liberal voting record.
Even bigger changes are coming to the 76th District as represented by Republican Eric Smith of Burlington if the current map passes. He would gain the parts of north and northeast Lyon County from Highland’s present coverage area as well as part of central and eastern Osage County.
Large-scale changes do not appear likely for 60th District Representative Mark Schreiber of Emporia.
The changes don’t end there. Southwest Lyon County and all of Chase County would shift from the 76th District to the 13th, currently represented by Republican Joe Newland of Neodeshea. In addition, Highland also says there is a push underway to renumber the districts after this round of redistricting is completed.
