Flint Hills Technical College capped off a weekend’s worth of graduation activities inside White Auditorium Sunday.
The college began the afternoon with its dental hygiene and nurse pinning ceremony before the official commencement ceremony where roughly 140 students walked across the stage to receive their technical certificate, Associate of Applied Sciences degree or high school diploma. This included Sunday’s commencement speaker Monica Lucena-Olvera who received her associate degree in Multimedia Design.
Lucena-Olvera, a native of Tijuana, Mexico, immigrated to the United States back in 2011 with her mother and sister. She shared her journey as part of her comments Sunday and says she hopes her story can serve as a source of inspiration to her fellow graduates.

While 140 students walked the stage Sunday, a total of 249 FHTC students received degrees or certificates as part of the 2022 spring class.
Sunday’s ceremony followed graduate and undergraduate commencement activities for Emporia State University Friday and Saturday as well as numerous high school graduations. Santa Fe Trail, Burlington, Hartford, Olpe, Madison-Virgil, Southern Coffey County and Northern Heights all had commencement activities Saturday while Eureka, Osage City, Waverly and Lebo held activities Sunday.
Hamilton has its graduation activities May 21, while Emporia and Council Grove have activities May 22.
