Emporia Public Works is done with initial repairs on one of two waterlines that failed Tuesday afternoon.
Crews spent several hours repairing a 16-inch line that failed on 15th just west of Chestnut, sending water rushing eastward on 15th and south on Chestnut to at least C of E Drive near planned waterline construction at 12th.
Crews also noted a waterline break on Graphic Arts near US Highway 50 at the same time as the 15th Avenue break. KVOE News has been told work will begin in earnest on the Graphic Arts break Wednesday.
Details about the number of customers affected with the breaks have not been announced.
West 15th has now had two significant water main breaks the past three weeks, including one just southeast of CareArc at 15th and State. CareArc had to shut down June 20 after a fire line connected to the water main broke under its parking lot.
5-10 pm Tuesday: Simultaneous waterline breaks reported on opposite sides of Emporia Tuesday
Emporia Underground Utility crews are in the process of repairing simultaneous waterline breaks on opposite sides of town.
The first break was reported just before 4:40 pm at the intersection of 15th and Chestnut in north Emporia. The break was on a 16 inch line.
According to the city of Emporia’s official Facebook page, the damaged line has been replaced with 14 feet of PVC pipe.
The second break was reported in far west Emporia at the intersection of US Highway 50 and Graphic Arts Road. City staff report the break is not affecting water service to area businesses and will be worked on Wednesday.
Additional details are pending.
Residents are asked to avoid the areas if possible as repair work continues. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more information as it becomes available.
