Kansas House Representative Mark Schreiber has filed a resolution asking the federal government to fulfill its promise of funding special education programs.
The 60th District representative from Emporia says the federal government hasn’t met its stated obligation for years, and it’s high time it did.
The resolution has no official statutory weight, but Schreiber says it shows Congress that state lawmakers are aware of the issue and are looking for
At the same time, Schreiber says state lawmakers haven’t met their obligations of funding 92 percent of excess costs. He’s fully in favor of having the state fulfilling its promise, although that won’t be decided until lawmakers finish the budget process. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has called on lawmakers to cover the federal gap as part of this year’s budget discussions.
