Plans are still on track to open up a pair of bridges on Kansas Highway 99 over the Kansas Turnpike this week.
The Kansas Turnpike Authority has been raising bridges over the Turnpike six and 13 miles northeast of Emporia as part of the KTA’s ongoing push towards cashless tolling next year. Besides increasing the clearance heights, the Lyon County work zones have also included improving guardrails, bridge piers and slopes.
K-99 has been closed north of Emporia since April, and the full highway should reopen to all drivers by Oct. 30. This means the better-than-20-mile detour involving Interstate 35, the Kansas Turnpike from Emporia to the Admire exit and US-56 from the Turnpike west to K-99 remains in effect until cleared.
