The Emporia State track & field team won two events with 12 provisional qualifying marks at the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Bearcat Stadium in Maryville, Mo. on Sunday. The three-day event ended with the Hornet men finishing fifth while the women were 11th. Ty Anderson led the way for the men with a meet-high 19.5 points while winning the 100m dash. He also helped the Hornet 4x100m relay team finish third while finishing second in the long jump. Meanwhile All-American Travis Morrison completed the indoor/outdoor double by winning the shot put with a throw of 58-9 ¼ inches. Kingsley Bennett, like Anderson, had a provisional qualifying time in the 100m and finished third. The 4x400m relay team of Jack Watson, Isaac Tarango, Carter Cox, and Jake Johnson finished runner-up with a provisional qualifying time. Johnson finished third in the 400m hurdles with the second fastest time in school history.
On the women’s side, Mele Taula had provisional qualifying throws in the shot put and discus finishing fourth in the shot put. Abigael Reid was fifth in the 400m hurdles with a provisional qualifying mark that was the third best in school history. ESU is scheduled to compete in a last chance qualifier event next weekend with a chance to reach provisional marks to be selected for the NCAA Championships. The Hornets have 18 provisional marks as a team with five ranked inside the top 16 nationally.
