After several days of little to no fire activity, area firefighters had two fires to deal with Thursday.
Hartford-Neosho Rapids put out a tractor fire that developed west of Hartford, but not before the tractor in the 1500 block of Road 90 was already well on its way to being a total loss. Lyon County deputies Danny Broyles and Chuck Moore say the tractor was having electrical issues Wednesday. The fuses were replaced, but neighbors noticed the tractor on fire Thursday afternoon and called 911.
Nobody was in the tractor at the time of the fire. The tractor was near a building, but the structure did not catch fire.
Separately, Emporia Fire was called to 121 South West after smoke was reported coming from the house. Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says the fire was limited to a trash can in the kitchen, with minimal smoke as a result. Conley says the likely cause is improper discard of burning materials.
