An update in zoning regulations, or rather a changeover, appears to be coming for Lyon County.
During the Lyon County Commission’s weekly action meeting Thursday morning, Wingert Sign Company owner Fred Wingert and his legal counsel Monte Miller made a presentation to commissioners seeking a change in regulations for county billboards. Simply, Wingert and Miller were requesting the county adopt the Kansas Department of Transportations regulations noting the state and county documents are “out of conformity.”
Miller tells KVOE News the state regulations if adopted, would call for no new construction but would allow for double-sided billboards and would permit the billboards to be erected in closer proximity to a roadway.
Miller says that change alone could mean more safety for motorists on local highways.
County commissioners expressed no concerns with the changeover and Miller says the next step in the process will be for County Zoning Administrator Sam Seeley to draw up needed paperwork for a formal application to the state. Miller anticipates it may take 60 to 90 days to complete the changeover process, subject to approval of the county’s application to the state.
In other business, Thursday, Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods submitted a request for the consideration of asphalt oil vendors whenever product is needed. This will allow the Highway Department more flexibility to consider whatever vendor may be available to provide the materials when said materials are needed.
County Clerk Tammy Vopat also submitted a request for the commission to consider the Certification of Direct Election Expenses from the Presidential Preference Primary held last month. The State of Kansas will reimburse those expenses.
Facilities Director Robbie Weiss submitted a better than $30,000 quote from Schuman Electric for a breaker replacement and Emergency Communications Director Roxanne Van Gundy sought approval of an invoice for annual radio tower maintenance to be paid for with 911 funds. Van Gundy also submitted a request for herself and LCECC supervisors to attend the annual NENA National Conference in October.
All requests were approved unanimously. The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action session next Thursday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
