Empora’s American Legion Post 5 hosted a special fundraiser Saturday for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship.
About $500 was generated locally for this needs-based scholarship, which is earmarked for children of US military service personnel who either died on active duty or received a disability of at least 50 percent. Statewide, the total was $31,000.
The Legion had a fundraising biscuits and gravy breakfast before the Poker Run and Legacy Run launched at 10:30 am. Herb Burris, a rider from Emporia, told KVOE why he rides.
The ride included stops in Williamsburg, Scranton, Harveyville and Americus before returning to the Legion for a “burger burn,” awards and prize drawings.
Over 40 American Legion Riders from across Kansas were also in town to raise money and awareness for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship.
