Peter Pan Park is dealing with a fish kill heading into the weekend.
The city of Emporia announced the presence of dead fish as part of a social media post Friday. The city has not yet announced the number or kinds of fish affected.
The city says the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has tested the oxygen level in the lake and found it “below the level needed for fish to survive.” KDWP says 5 milligrams of oxygen per liter of water is the baseline, and the pond was at 3.7 mg/L. City Manager Trey Cocking says the combination of temperatures near, at or above 100 degrees the past two weeks and the shallow depth of the pond — around six feet maximum — depleted the oxygen.
Wildlife and Parks also says the city does not need to take any additional action at this time.
