Emporia Police officers say a man lost consciousness while driving early Tuesday, leading to a crash into an apartment building.
Officers and Emporia Fire/EMS were dispatched to 12th and Highland around 6 am, finding a car in the south wall of the Prairie Sage apartment building along 12th between Highland and Union. Police Capt. Ray Mattas says 34-year-old Luis Videsmateo, hometown not listed, was eastbound when he had a medical emergency. Videsmateo went left of center, hit a curb, left the street and hit the building.
Videsmateo was taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health for treatment, although Mattas has clarified Videsmateo was not hurt in the crash.
Mattas says Videsmateo’s car partially broke through the wall of an occupied bedroom, and a repair crew says the front of the car was hanging over the bed with the occupant sleeping. The unnamed occupant was not hurt.
The crash also destroyed a central air unit.
