An equipment shed in southeast Lyon County was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon.
Olpe Fire Chief Wade Schmidt says the fire developed at 625 S, with a neighbor reporting the fire shortly before 5 pm. The shed was fully engulfed in flames with part of the roof already collapsed when crews arrived a few minutes later. Schmidt says the cause is undetermined, but a farm equipment malfunction may have led to the incident. The building was reduced to a few vertical posts before those were torn down. Several farm vehicles were also destroyed along with the building.
There were no injuries to people or animals.
Besides Olpe, responses came from Lyon County District 4 or Emporia’s rural department, as well as Hartford-Neosho Rapids and Madison. 4 Rivers also sent a crew to shut off power to the shed.
