The David Traylor Zoo is announcing the arrival of an orphaned male cougar cub from Washington state.
The young cougar cub was rescued by Washington Fish and Wildlife in late January, reportedly found sitting next to his deceased mother who had been shot illegally. After being rescued, the zoo has been working with Washington Fish and Wildlife officials to bring the cougar cub to Emporia.
The cub is approximately 16 weeks old, and zoo director Lisa Keith says he appears to be in good health.

The community will be asked to help decide a name for the cougar cub in the future.
In other zoo news, Sampson the 16-year old mountain lion is still under “guarded” prognosis, as he rests comfortably off-exhibit. He continues to receive special medical attention.
