Emporia High School took nine wrestlers to Wichita for the Kansas 5A State Wrestling Championships and five walked away with medals.
The Spartans had 1- 3rd place finish, 3 – 4th place finishes and a fifth place finish. Coach Dustin Malone says his team ended the weekend on a strong note.
Senior Hunter Williams defeated Joseph Hancock of Leavenworth 4-2 in the consolation finals to take third at 132 pounds.
In the consolation finals freshman Levi Buckridge lost to Drew Liles of Great Bend to take fourth at 113 pounds. Nilton Sandoval was defeated by Bryson Markovich of Mill Valley to take fourth at 132 pounds, and Anthony Delgado was beaten by Chase Ramirez of Valley Center at 160 pounds for fourth. Senior Isaac Williams at 145 pounds pinned AJ Lair of Pittsburgh to claim fifth place.
Goddard was the overall team state champions, Valley Center was second and Maize came in third. Emporia High finished the tournament in seventh place.
