A rocky fourth quarter cost the Emporia State womens basketball team in a 57-54 loss to Fort Hays State in the quarterfinal round of the MIAA tournament Thursday.
After building a 42-37 lead going to the 4th quarter the Lady Hornets would go over 6 minutes without scoring a point in the 4th quarter allowing Fort Hays to take advantage of 9 4th quarter turnovers. Fort Hays also made 15 of 20 freethrows in the 4th quarter. The Lady Hornets led 16-15 after the first quarter and trailed at halftime 30-26. In the 3rd quarter Emporia State out scored Fort Hays 16-7 to take a 5 point lead into the final 10 minutes of play. Coach Jory Collins said it was still one of the better defensive efforts of the season.
Emporia State had 4 players score in double-figures lead by Tyra Jones game high 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jessica Wayne added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jacee Kramer in her final game as a Lady Hornet finished with 11 points.
Marissa Preston added 10 points. Fort Hays had 1 player score in double-figures, Carly Heim with 13 points. The Emporia State women finish with a record of 17-11.
