The Olpe Lady Eagles and Burlingame Bearcats overcame early deficits to advance to the 2A state tournament.
Olpe fell behind early in the first half to the Jefferson County North Chargers trailing 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles would surge in the second and lead 20-19 going into halftime. Olpe would maintain the one point lead throughout the third quarter and a 13-7 run in the fourth sealed the sub-state championship for Olpe 53-45.
Olpe was led in scoring by freshman Macy Smith, sophomore Neleh Davis and senior Briana Vogts each with 11 points.
Olpe Head Coach Jesse Nelson says this was a great test for his team.
Sophomore Josie Weishaar led the chargers with 13 points.
Olpe claimed the two seed in the tournament and will face the seventh seed Spearville Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Manhattan.
In the boys championship game Burlingame jumped out to an early 11-2 lead within the first three minutes. Lyndon would then go on a 10-2 run to pull within one at the end of the first quarter. Burlingame would maintain the one point lead throughout the second quarter before a three-pointer at the buzzer would give Lyndon a 23-22 lead going into halftime. In the third quarter Burlingame would regain the lead and a series of free throws in the fourth clinched the Bearcats their second consecutive sub-state championship 52-41 over the Lyndon Tigers.
Senior Jake Thompson led the Bearcats with 13 points.
Burlingame Head Coach Creighton Winters says confidence in the second half was the key for his team.
Lyndon was led by seniors Dexton Swineheart and Jamie Reed with 13 each.
Burlingame, the four seed, will face the fifth seeded Salina Sacred Heart Thursday in Manhattan at 8:15.
Four other area teams earned trips to state Saturday night.
The Hartford girls defeated Waverly 65-61. They will face the six seed Central Christian from Hutchinson in Dodge City at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
The Waverly boys outscored Hartford 53-40. The 8th seeded Bulldogs will face the one seed Almena-Northern Valley Thursday at 3 p.m. in Dodge City.
The Southern Coffey County boys defeated St. Paul 56-49. SCC will claim the four seed and face fifth seeded St. John Hudson at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in Hays.
St. Paul outscored the Southern Coffey County girls 57-20. They will face St. John Hudson Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Hays.
In 3A boys play Council Grove slipped past Osage City 54-53. Council Grove will take the eighth seed and face one seed Maur Hill-Mount Academy at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hutchinson.
In other sub-state finals:
Rural Vista outscored Chase County girls 41-36.
Royal Valley needed 2 overtimes to outscore Mission Valley 53-49.
Baldwin defeated Burlington girls 55-35.
Anderson County outscored the Burlington boys 95-84.
The State tournaments begin Wednesday.
