Get ready for a windy second half of the work week.
A red flag warning impacts Chase and Greenwood counties from 1-7 pm Wednesday, meaning automatic burn bans while those alerts are in effect. Meanwhile, virtually the entire KVOE listening area — Lyon County included — is in a wind advisory from 11 am to 7 pm.
Meanwhile, Chase and Greenwood counties are now in a red flag warning for 1-8 pm Thursday. This replaces a fire weather watch originally posted for those counties.
Temperatures will top out in the upper 70s Wednesday and the low 80s Thursday. They will combine with winds as high as 30-40 mph to increase the fire danger, and even a chance of showers and storms Friday will do little to tamp down the fire risk.
9 pm Tuesday: High winds, critical fire danger in place Wednesday
To say outdoor burning is strongly discouraged for Wednesday would be an understatement.
The deepening drought and the latest run of high winds has set up the latest episode of critical fire danger for the Flint Hills and much of Kansas. Across the KOE listening area, Chase and Greenwood counties are under a fire weather watch from 1-7 pm. A wind advisory covers Lyon and all surrounding counties except Wabaunsee from 1-7 pm.
South winds will be 20-30 mph steadily. Gusts could reach as high as 45 mph, meaning fires will grow rapidly and could move unpredictably if they develop.
