Students from the Didde Catholic Campus Center at Emporia State are planning to spend the next couple nights in boxes along Merchant Street to benefit the Emporia Rescue Mission.
The annual Sleep in a Box fundraiser will see about 30 to 40 participants who will spend Friday and Saturday evening in cardboard boxes to emphasize awareness of homelessness. During the event, buckets will be out near the campers for people to donate money. Director of the event Shelby Russell explains what the proceeds will go toward.
Members of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity and students in the Didde Student Government will take part in the event, come rain or shine. Last year’s event raised more than $2,200 for the Rescue Mission. This year’s goal is $2,500.
Donations can be dropped off at this weekend’s event or mailed to the Didde Catholic Campus Center at 1415 Merchant Street.
