Work has started on railroad crossings in Emporia.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe has announced three crossings will close at some time this week. Early indications are the crossing at Peyton Street could be closed for most of the week. Shorter closures are planned for East and Carter, and the City Clerkâs Office has said the railroad will not close all three crossings at the same time.
This is one of three significant improvement projects beginning this week in Lyon County. Monday, the Kansas Turnpike Authority closed a bridge on Road 400 between Y and for maintenance. Early estimates are this is a six-week project from start to finish.
On Tuesday, Twin Lakes Drive in northwest Emporia will close to traffic just west of Twin Lakes Court. Officials are estimating a two-week project to replace a 16-inch water line. Nearby residents will have access to their driveways at all times as this is in effect.
