Scammers are now targeting social media accounts of users to try new ways of obtaining personal information.
The Emporia Police Department has released two examples of residents that received messages on Facebook Messenger trying to solicit money from an individual noting a fake federal assistance program. Sgt. Lisa Sage says there’s a variety of reasons why scammers would hack into one’s Facebook account.
Scammers in the latest attempt somehow hacked into a citizen’s Facebook account and sent the message to all of the citizen’s friends. Police say it’s a good idea if you feel your account has been compromised to change your password. It’s also advised to update passwords periodically, at least every three months. Sage says you should report to police if you feel your account has been compromised.
With a growing number of scams, police also say you should always remain suspicious of things that sound too good to be true and never give out personal information over the phone.
