The state’s voter registration process was a central point in a special candidate forum hosted by Lyon County Republicans on Thursday night.
Secretary of State candidates Keith Esau, Craig McCullah and Scott Schwab outlined the reasons why they hope to supplant Kris Kobach in November. The office has been embroiled in controversy with Kobach involved in a longstanding legal battle over voter registration policies. A ruling on the federal case could come at any time and Kobach was ruled in contempt of court just Wednesday.
Schwab, the current chair of the House Elections Committee, says consistency in the voting process is critical to its success.
McCullah has served in the office as deputy assistant director since 2016, leading the agency’s administrative division, and before that was the office’s director of public affairs and human resources.
Esau is a past chair and vice chair of the House Elections Committee. He says the current laws are fine, but the office needs to do a better job of helping people get the documentation they need to be registered voters.
A fourth candidate, Kelly Arnold was invited to participate but withdrew from the race earlier in the day.
