Two rekindles marked fire activity in Lyon County on Wednesday.
Fire crews from Emporia and Americus were dispatched to a grass fire in the 800 block of Road 240, about two miles east of Americus, shortly before noon. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Rich Gould says a fire redeveloped from a Sunday burn. Crews were able to contain the fire as it lost fuel near a tree line. Roughly two acres burned.
Another rekindle from Sunday kicked up shortly after 3 pm. Emporia and Reading crews were called out to 1970 Road 190, about six miles east of Emporia, for a reported smoke smell. Gould says that smell came from smoldering logs in a creek bed.
Fire danger was extremely high Wednesday, thanks to ongoing dry conditions and gusty northwest winds. Conditions will improve Thursday with winds below 10 mph, but fire danger will still be very high because of the ongoing drought.
