The Centers for Disease Control is warning consumers not to buy romaine lettuce, unless you know for sure it didn’t come from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.
If you’re not sure, it’s advised to just throw it out. The warning goes out to grocery stores and restaurants across the United States. Information collected to date indicates that romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona region could be contaminated with E.coli and could make people sick. So far, the CDC says no common grower, supplier, distributor or brand has been identified.
The expanded warning is based on information from newly reported illnesses in Alaska. Ill people in Alaska reported eating lettuce from whole heads of romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region. No illnesses have so far been linked to Kansas although 53 illnesses have been reported in 16 states.
The warning extends to whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.
