With foot traffic continuing to increase, the Salvation Army is preparing to restock the shelves at their food pantry.
The 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is set to take place May 12. The food drive is a team effort between the U.S. Postal Service and The Salvation Army which encourages individuals to donate items for the food pantry.
Letter carrier Janet Way was a recent guest on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment and explained how the process works.
Community members will receive blue bags with their mail in the coming days, which they may place their donation items in.
Salvation Army Captain Deb Thompson says all donations are vital as the number of individuals they serve steadily continue to grow.
Thompson says the food need is just about across the board. The pantry is short on canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruits, peanut butter, pastas, soups, so-called helper meals, ramen noodles, baking items and pancake mixes.
Community members are asked to avoid any items in glass containers and to double check all expiration dates before placing items in bags or boxes for donation. All items will be picked up by mail carriers on May 12. For more information, contact Thompson at 620-342-3093 or Way at 620-794-3206.
