Six years ago, Emporia State University moved away from a longstanding tradition by holding two spring commencement activities instead of one. Now it’s changing its approach again.
For the first time in its 155-year history, Emporia State is having three commencement events. Students earning graduate degrees will receive their degrees at 6 pm May 11. Meanwhile, students obtaining their bachelor’s degrees will have a split ceremony, with the ceremony for students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at 9 am May 12 and the ceremony for students in the School of Business and Teachers College at 2 pm May 12.
ESU used to hold a single graduation ceremony for years, but changed its approach in 2012 to have separate graduate and baccalaureate ceremonies. ESU says the size of the graduating class — 560 undergraduate candidates and another 350 graduate candidates — prompted the change for the spring 2018 graduating class.
All ceremonies will be at White Auditorium. Board of Regents member Daniel Thomas will be the commencement speaker at all three events.
