Turnout was steady for ESB Financial’s annual Community-Wide Shred and Recycle E-Waste Day on Saturday.
Vice President Karen Sommers called the event “wonderful,” saying the bank’s Green Team worked diligently to get everybody in and out quickly — as did a Lyon County crew that was picking up the electronic waste. The first event was held a decade ago, and one of the key facets of the original Shred and Recycle Day — protection against identity theft — is still a big part of the event today.
The ESB Financial Green Team handled the document shredding, and Sommers says it’s hard to keep track of which kinds of personal documents can be shredded when. ESB Financial has a document retention plan available in case people have questions.
The event has meant significant local honors for ESB Financial in the past. Three years ago, the bank claimed the Emporia-Lyon County Recycling Award for its efforts. When it started 10 years ago, the city of Emporia brought its recycling trailer, while Lyon County’s Hazardous Waste Department let people bring in certain chemicals for proper disposal. The county’s approach has changed over time to pick up the e-waste, including old computers and peripherals, flat-screen TVs, boomboxes and even lamps.
Tonnage amounts from Saturday are pending.
