WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Memorial to Fallen Educators at Emporia State University will need a signage adjustment soon. Not that organizers will mind.
President Donald Trump has signed legislation championed by Senator Jerry Moran and Congressman Roger Marshall to give the facility national designation. Emporia State University and the National Teachers Hall of Fame had advocated for this designation because the memorial is the only one of its kind to honor teachers, administrators and support staffers who have died shielding students from all forms of harm.
So far, better than 120 school staffers throughout our nation’s history have been noted at the memorial. Unfortunately, seven more names will be added during the official Teachers Hall of Fame induction ceremonies next month.
The memorial currently honors school staffers from pre-kindergarten through high school. Fundraising is underway to help expand the memorial to honor higher education staffers who have died protecting students. Groundbreaking happened in 2013, with the formal dedication a year later.
