Construction is progressing well on a new mixed-use development in the former Black & Gold District.
Walls are going up on the new Roosevelt Plaza Lofts development. That along with the neighboring Legacy Lofts will bring 47 residential units and 2,700 square feet of commercial space to the area of 11th Ave. between Commercial and Mechanic Street. Haag Development Managing Partner Cory Haag says he’s happy with the progress so far.
The new development will be similar to the nearby Chelsea Lofts, Granada Plaza & Lofts and Kellogg Plaza & Lofts downtown. Haag says the city of Emporia has shown a lot of investment into the area’s revitalization since the city commission implemented the Black & Gold District earlier in the decade.
The Black & Gold District was dissolved earlier this year after city commissioners noted it had met the city’s revitalization expectations.
Haag says talks continue with service businesses to rent out the commercial space of the $4.2 million private development, the largest ground-up private development in Emporia’s history. Leasing for both buildings will take place in 2019. The housing is believed to be ideal for young professionals, college students and a growing population of individuals desiring to live downtown. Haag says that could be ideal for people of all ages.
