The Dirty Kanza is now less than a month away and there are some big changes coming this year.
On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Monday, DK Promotions Director Lelan Dains said one of the new additions will be a 34-person trial run for their newest race appropriately titled the DK XL.
Along with the longer race will be the addition of a new teenage class. Dains says this could trigger a new extracurricular option for high school students.
Most of the Dirty Kanza races will take place June 2. The XL is the exception, starting the afternoon of June 1.
When the DK gets rolling, the All Things Gravel Expo will be expanding. Dains says the event has been for sponsors and riders in the past, but this year it’s expanding to the biking industry at large. Dains expects up to 50 vendors for the expo June 1-2 in the 700 block of Mechanic.
Dains now estimates some 2,700 riders will participate in all the races this year, easily besting the prior record of roughly 2,300 riders for last year’s event. International participation is helping to fuel the surge, with 16 countries represented this year — up from six last year.
