First United Methodist Church is raising funds for USD 253 students for the fourth straight year.
As in recent years, the Emporia church will team up with the district to supply all schools, both public and private, with supplies for students. Many of the donations benefit low-income households and homeless or unaccompanied students who have to live with either friends or foster families.
USD 253 Student and Family Resource Specialist Heather Wagner says many students are already challenged by unstable living conditions on top of the price for school supplies.
Donations from the church will not benefit only less fortunate students and families, but all students across the district. Dana Roemer of FUMC’s Serve Team says the donations go to all students to create a sense of equality in the classroom.
Last year the event raised $30,000 for school supplies. Roemer says the goal for this year will be between $35,000-$40,000 after the inclusion of district private schools. If you would like to donate, you may make out and deliver checks to First United Methodist Church located at 823 Merchant Street, and specify school supplies in the memo line. All donations must be made by June 30. Any donations after that will be carried over into next year’s funds.
