An unusually cool April gave agriculture producers quite a scare this year, but overall the damage was minimal.
Lyon County Extension Agent Brian Rees tells KVOE News he hasn’t seen much impact from the hard freezes seen between April 1 and April 15. Rees says the growing point for wheat in our area was still fairly well protected near the surface of the ground when the colder and dryer air was more prevalent.
It’s likely, Rees says, producers will continue to play catch up during the rest of the growing season as we are still fairly dry. He says he does expect to see some improvement in the near-term, but worries it may continue to be a tough year for growers.
The Emporia area had at least six hard freezes during the month of April, where temperatures went below 27 degrees.
