One person was taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon following a collision between an SUV and a bicycle near just north of the intersection at 6th and Commercial Street in downtown Emporia.
Emporia Police say the southbound cyclist was struck as the SUV driver pulled out of the driveway at Capitol Federal Savings at around 5:15 p.m. Thankfully the victim, an older male was not seriously hurt and was helped to his feet by medical personnel. EPD Lt. Kevin Risley says the accident happened at a very slow pace and the cyclist was not seriously hurt, but was taken to Newman Regional Health by ambulance for observation. The SUV driver was not injured.
According to Risley, the cyclist was riding on the sidewalk downtown, which is a violation of city ordinance. Neither party involved has been cited. The accident remains under further investigation.
