With a potential renovation hanging in the balance, the Emporia Recreation Center staff and community were presented with a look at various needs and wants from recent focus groups.
Architectural firm Gould Evans and partner GreenPlay, LLC both of Lawrence met with more than 80 stakeholders in a total of nine focus groups split up May 10 and May 17. Their responses identified key priority areas of the building needing a facelift, more gym space, an improved pool area and the adding of more socialization hubs and multipurpose space.
Gould Evans Senior Associate Architect Denton Nichols says the location of the building is a key strength because it’s in a walkable location within a neighborhood and supports the community in a time when most communities are building rec centers that aren’t as easily accessible.
Key issues overall include passing a bond referendum, creating a safer building with one controlled access point, making the center more inviting and improving parking. Nichols explains what the next steps will be as they continue work with Rec Center Director Tom McEvoy.
The Emporia Recreation Commission was purposely left out of Thursday’s forum so as to not sway public opinion. Information from Thursday’s meeting is expected to be posted to the Emporia Rec Center’s website by Friday.
